New Delhi, September 10: Indian Navy sailing training ship INS Sudarshini reached Livorno in Italy as part of its ongoing transoceanic expedition, Lokayan 2026, strengthening maritime cooperation and professional ties between the two countries.
The vessel arrived at the Italian port on September 9 after covering more than 17,400 nautical miles during its deployment across 10 countries.As part of the voyage, INS Sudarshini conducted a coordinated sailing exercise in the Mediterranean Sea with the Italian Navy’s sailing training ship ITS Palinuro while proceeding towards Livorno.
The exercise involved joint sailing and manoeuvring activities, providing the crews of both vessels an opportunity to interact and exchange their professional experience.The port visit is particularly significant as Livorno is home to Italy’s prestigious Naval Academy, Accademia Navale.
During the stay, Indian naval trainees and Italian cadets are scheduled to participate in cross-deck interactions aimed at promoting greater understanding and professional engagement between the two navies.
INS Sudarshini will also be open to visitors during its stay, offering an opportunity for the local community to view the Indian Navy’s sailing training vessel and gain an insight into India’s maritime traditions.
The Lokayan 2026 deployment combines long-distance sailing training with naval diplomacy and international engagement.
The Indian Navy’s interaction with partner navies during the expedition is aimed at promoting stronger maritime partnerships.The deployment also supports India’s broader SAGAR vision — Security and Growth for All in the Region — which focuses on cooperation, security and sustainable development in the maritime domain.
The visit to Livorno is expected to further strengthen the longstanding professional relationship between the Indian and Italian navies while providing valuable operational and training exposure to naval personnel from both countries.
