Jammu, July 11: Five people were killed and one injured on Friday evening after a vehicle veered off a mountain road and plunged into a 600-foot-deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district, police said.
The accident occurred around 8 p.m. near Madina Masjid hill on the Senabati link road in the Ukhral Pogal Paristan area, when a Tata Sumo lost control and fell into the gorge, a police official said.
Five occupants — Mohammad Rafiq Gujjar, Tauqeer Ahmed Bhat, Abdul Latief Gujjar, Aijaz Ahmed Bhat, and Shakeel Ahmad — died on the spot, the official added. Two injured passengers were rushed to Government Medical College (GMC) in Anantnag, but one succumbed to injuries after being shifted to SKIMS hospital in Srinagar.
The district administration announced financial assistance of ₹1 lakh ($1,200) each for the families of the deceased and ₹25,000 for the injured. District Commissioner Ramban, Mohammad Alyas Khan, expressed condolences in a social media post, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured.”
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also conveyed his condolences. “Saddened to learn about the loss of lives due to the tragic road accident in Ramban. I pray for a speedy recovery of those injured in the accident,” he said in a statement. Road accidents are common in the mountainous regions of Jammu and Kashmir, where winding roads and poor visibility often contribute to fatal mishaps.
