Hyderabad, July 9: At least fifteen people were hospitalised on Tuesday after allegedly consuming adulterated toddy at a local shop in Hyderabad’s Kukatpally area, an excise official said.
One person is reported to be in critical condition, while the others are undergoing treatment at Ramdev Hospital in the city, according to hospital sources. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, and samples of the toddy have been collected for testing. Preliminary reports suggest the drink may have been contaminated, but officials said a detailed analysis is pending.
“We are looking into the source and quality of the toddy served at the shop,” the excise official said. “Appropriate legal action will be taken based on the outcome of the inquiry.”
Toddy, a traditional alcoholic beverage made from the sap of palm trees, is widely consumed in parts of southern India. Concerns over adulteration have led to increased regulatory scrutiny in recent years. Local officials have urged the public to exercise caution and report any suspicious vendors to authorities.
