Pune, November 15: At least eight people were killed and 14 injured on Thursday after a container truck rammed into several vehicles, triggering a chain collision on a busy stretch near Navale Bridge in Pune district of western Maharashtra, police said.
Preliminary reports from Pune Police indicated that between 20 and 25 vehicles were involved in the crash, which occurred around 5:30 p.m. Several vehicles caught fire after the initial impact, officials added.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced 500,000 rupees ($6,000) in financial assistance for the families of the deceased, calling the incident “unfortunate.” “I pay my heartfelt tributes to the people who lost their lives in this incident. We share the grief of their families,” Fadnavis said in a post on X.
Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar) MP Supriya Sule also expressed condolences and wished a quick recovery for the injured, who are undergoing treatment at local hospitals. Police have begun investigating the cause of the collision and the circumstances that led the container truck to crash into other vehicles.
