Delhi’s Karol Bagh building collapse during demolition leaves one dead, three injured

New Delhi, Aug 21: A labourer was killed and three others were injured after a two-storey building collapsed during demolition work in Delhi’s Karol Bagh area on Friday, police said.The incident took place at around 11:15 am on Pyare Lal Road in Regarpura, where workers were engaged in bringing down an old structure.

According to the preliminary inquiry, the building owners had engaged a private contractor for the demolition. Police said the owner had allegedly not obtained the required permission from the concerned authority before the work began.

The structure suddenly collapsed while the workers were carrying out demolition, trapping several of them beneath the debris.After receiving information from local residents, police and fire service personnel reached the site and launched a rescue operation.One of the workers, identified as Sheikh Shamshad, sustained serious injuries and later died.

His body was taken to the mortuary at Lady Hardinge Medical College Hospital for further procedures.Another worker, Mohammad Ayub, suffered a head injury and a fracture in his right hand. He was initially treated before being shifted to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where his condition was reported to be critical.

A third worker, Sheikh Saidul, suffered injuries to his limbs and was admitted to Jeevan Mala Hospital. Another labourer, Rafik-Ul, sustained minor injuries, police said.The building owners and the contractor involved in the demolition have been detained for questioning.

Police said further legal action would be initiated under applicable provisions after verifying the circumstances surrounding the collapse. Investigators are also examining whether any violation of demolition procedures or safety norms contributed to the incident.
