New Delhi, Sept 24: The Delhi Police have intensified security operations in parks and other public places across the capital following the alleged gang rape of a minor at Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Temple.The police have launched an area-domination drive aimed at increasing visibility, preventing criminal activity and improving the sense of security among women and other visitors to public spaces.
According to police, intensive checks were conducted on September 22 and 23 across vulnerable locations in the Central Range. The operation resulted in legal action against 379 people under various provisions, according to officials.Police teams carried out searches in parks and other sensitive areas falling under several police station jurisdictions.
Officials said action was taken under provisions of the Delhi Police Act, Delhi Excise Act, Gambling Act, COTPA, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, depending on the circumstances of individual cases.
During the operation, five parks in the Daryaganj area were checked, with 66 people reportedly apprehended under the Delhi Police Act. Searches in the Jama Masjid area resulted in action against 45 people under different provisions.
Police also inspected locations including Minto Road Complex Park, Shivaji Park, DBG Park, Nehru Park and Shastri Park. The operation in these areas resulted in action against 60 people under provisions related to excise and other offences, while three vehicles were seized.
Similar checks were conducted in parks in Hauz Qazi, Paharganj and Patel Nagar, where 82 people were reportedly apprehended. In Prasad Nagar, police took action against 23 people under excise-related provisions and the Gambling Act.As part of the campaign, police teams are also conducting security audits of public spaces.
They are identifying poorly lit areas, damaged fencing, unauthorised encroachments and entry or exit points that could pose security concerns.Details of such infrastructure-related issues are being shared with civic agencies, including the Public Works Department and municipal authorities, for corrective measures.The police have also deployed women personnel in sensitive areas.
All-women patrol teams are conducting foot patrols and surveillance using scooters to increase police presence in locations frequented by women and other members of the public.Joint Commissioner of Police (Central) Madhur Verma said the initiative is intended to be a sustained area-domination programme rather than a short-term operation.
The police aim to maintain regular surveillance and prevent public spaces from becoming vulnerable to anti-social activities.The security measures come after a meeting involving Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar and officials from the Delhi Development Authority and Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
The meeting focused on strengthening security arrangements in parks.Senior Delhi Police officers have also reviewed measures related to women’s safety and issued directions for improving security and police presence at vulnerable locations.
