Lucknow, Aug. 6: The Uttar Pradesh government is reviewing the eligibility of Commonwealth Games gold medallist Asmita Dey for the state’s cash reward scheme after questions were raised regarding the criteria under its sports incentive policy.
Asmita, who created history by becoming the first Indian judoka to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women’s 48kg category at the 2026 Games in Glasgow, is eligible for a ₹1.5 crore reward announced for gold medallists.
However, officials are examining whether she meets the policy requirements before releasing the incentive.The issue has emerged because, although Dey represents Uttar Pradesh in domestic judo competitions and has been serving as a Sub-Inspector in the Uttar Pradesh Police since 2023, her permanent family residence is in Tripura.
The matter has prompted a review of the state’s eligibility norms for sports awards.The Uttar Pradesh Judo Association has backed Dey’s claim, stating that she has consistently represented the state at national competitions and has contributed significantly to its success in the sport.
The association argued that her performances and long-standing association with Uttar Pradesh should be taken into account while determining her eligibility.State officials said no final decision has been taken.
The Sports Department is verifying the list of Commonwealth Games medallists and examining each case in accordance with the existing sports reward policy before approving financial incentives.
The case has also sparked a wider discussion on sports policies across states, as many athletes represent states where they are employed or receive training, even though their permanent domicile may be elsewhere.
The Uttar Pradesh government has maintained that all athletes who meet the prescribed eligibility criteria will receive the benefits available under the state’s sports incentive scheme, with a final decision on Dey’s case expected after the review process is completed.
