Bengaluru, October 2: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge underwent a pacemaker implantation at a Bengaluru hospital and is stable, his son and Karnataka minister Priyank Kharge said on Wednesday.
The 83-year-old veteran politician, who also leads the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, was admitted to the city’s M.S. Ramaiah Hospital on Tuesday after doctors advised the procedure for age-related issues and breathlessness.
“My father’s condition is stable and he is doing well. The pacemaker was required to stabilise his heart rate. There is no need for anyone to worry,” Priyank Kharge said in a post on social media platform X. He added that doctors have recommended two to three days of rest.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited Kharge at the hospital on Wednesday and said he was “alright” and expected to be discharged soon. “He is speaking, he is okay and normal,” Siddaramaiah told reporters.
Party sources said Kharge, who has been travelling extensively across the country in his role as Congress president, is likely to resume responsibilities after recovery.
