New Delhi, August 20: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Monday that Beijing and New Delhi should develop a “correct strategic understanding” and regard each other as partners, as he met Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in the latest effort to stabilise ties after years of border tensions.

Wang said exchanges and dialogue at multiple levels had gradually resumed and bilateral relations were returning to cooperation, according to a Chinese readout. He also urged both countries, as major powers, to set an example for other developing nations in unity and self-strengthening.

Jaishankar, in his opening remarks, said relations must be guided by “mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest” and stressed that the basis for positive momentum was maintaining peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). He reiterated the need to move forward with the de-escalation process, while raising “particular concerns” he had flagged in Beijing during their July meeting.

The two ministers also discussed economic and trade issues, river data sharing, border trade, connectivity and wider bilateral exchanges, Indian officials said.

Wang, on a two-day trip, is scheduled to hold the 24th round of border talks with Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval on Tuesday and will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His visit comes days before Modi travels to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, his first visit to the country in seven years.

Wang is the first senior Chinese minister to visit India since the two sides agreed in October 2024 to end their prolonged border standoff that began in 2020, when a clash in the Galwan Valley pushed relations to their lowest in six decades.
