Guwahati, Jan 9: The Ministry of Textiles on Thursday organised a high level North Eastern Region Conclave here to review progress and chart a roadmap for accelerating the growth of the textile sector in the Northeastern states.

Held under the theme “Strengthening and Empowering the Textile Sector of the North-Eastern Region of India”, the conclave brought together policymakers and stakeholders to deliberate on strengthening the region’s textile ecosystem through coordinated policy action and targeted interventions.

The conclave was attended by Union Minister for Textiles Shri Giriraj Singh, Minister of State for Textiles Shri Pabitra Margherita, textile and industry ministers from Northeastern states, Members of Parliament, senior officials from the Centre and State governments, and representatives of key textile sector institutions.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Giriraj Singh said the Northeastern region plays an integral role in India’s textile sector and reiterated the Union Government’s commitment to its development. He emphasised the need for enhanced policy coordination, investment promotion, skill development, value addition and improved market access to unlock the region’s full potential.

Deliberations at the conclave highlighted the North-East’s unique strengths, including its rich handloom heritage, GI-tagged products, diverse silk varieties, bamboo crafts, and the strong participation of women artisans and weavers.

Participants underlined the importance of adopting a coordinated and integrated approach to strengthen textile value chains, enhance exports and attract investments. Emphasis was also laid on blending traditional skills with modern technology, design innovation and robust market linkages to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth.

The discussions are expected to help shape future policies and initiatives aimed at positioning the Northeastern region as a key contributor to India’s expanding textile economy, the Ministry said.

The announcement was issued by PIB Delhi on January 8, 2026.
