Panaji, Sep 2: Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Wednesday underlined the important role of Booth Level Officers (BLOs) in India’s electoral system, describing them as a crucial link between the Election Commission and citizens.
Kumar interacted with more than 1,000 BLOs from different parts of Goa during a programme held in the state.Addressing the gathering, the CEC said BLOs form an important grassroots pillar of the electoral process in the world’s largest democracy.
He stressed that electoral rolls are prepared and elections are conducted in accordance with the Constitution, applicable laws and directions issued by the Election Commission of India.Highlighting their responsibilities, Kumar said BLOs are often the first point of contact for citizens on matters concerning the electoral process.
He appreciated the contribution of Goa’s BLOs in the preparation and maintenance of electoral rolls.The CEC also emphasised the importance of maintaining the credibility and integrity of voter lists.
He said electoral rolls and the wider election process are subject to scrutiny involving Booth Level Agents (BLAs) of recognised political parties as well as polling and counting representatives appointed by candidates.
During the programme, short videos explaining the responsibilities of BLOs and BLAs were released. The video on BLO duties was presented in Konkani, while the BLA-related video was in English.
The event also featured a cultural programme showcasing Goa’s traditions and heritage.The interaction concluded with a question-and-answer session, during which BLOs raised issues and sought clarifications directly from the Chief Election Commissioner.
