New Delhi, November 10: A powerful explosion in a slow-moving car outside the historic Red Fort in central Delhi on Monday evening killed at least 10 people and injured several others, authorities said, prompting a nationwide security alert.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the blast occurred around 7 p.m. in a Hyundai i20 near the Red Fort, damaging nearby vehicles and injuring pedestrians. “All possibilities are being explored and a thorough investigation will be conducted, taking all options into account,” Shah told reporters.
The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined. Police and forensic teams cordoned off the area and began combing operations to collect evidence. Fire and rescue personnel rushed to the scene as crowds gathered near the site of the blast.
Officials said the explosion was of “high intensity,” and the injured have been taken to nearby hospitals.
Following the incident, the Union Home Ministry issued a nationwide alert, directing states to heighten security in crowded areas, transport hubs, and tourist locations. Additional forces were deployed in major cities, including Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru.
Authorities have not ruled out any possibility, and the investigation is ongoing to determine whether the explosion was accidental or deliberate.
