Patna, Nov 17: Bihar’s political landscape shifted decisively on Monday as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar submitted his resignation to Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, setting in motion the formal process for the formation of a new NDA government following the alliance’s sweeping election victory.

Nitish arrived at Raj Bhavan with senior ministers, including Samrat Chaudhary, shortly after chairing the final meeting of his outgoing cabinet. The council of ministers approved a resolution recommending dissolution of the assembly with effect from November 19, and authorised Nitish to take the necessary steps to complete the transition.

Senior JD (U) functionary Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said three resolutions were passed at the cabinet meeting. The first recommended dissolution of the current assembly; the second recorded appreciation for state officials and employees for their work during the government’s term; and the third expressed gratitude to Nitish Kumar for leading the NDA to an “overwhelming majority” in the recently concluded polls.

The Governor has asked Nitish to continue in office until alternative arrangements are made. Raj Bhavan sources indicated that the new government will be formed on November 20, with Nitish Kumar expected to take oath as Chief Minister for the tenth time. Preparations for the ceremony are under way at Gandhi Maidan, where a large pandal is being erected under tight security. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also expected to attend.

The BJP and JD (U) legislative parties will meet on Tuesday, after which Nitish is expected to be formally elected as leader at a joint NDA meeting.
