Patna, Sep 3: Bihar is likely to remain under the grip of active monsoon conditions over the next week, with the Meteorological Department forecasting heavy rainfall at different places, along with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of up to 30–40 kmph till September 9.
The weather warning comes at a time when several parts of the state are already facing a flood threat due to rising water levels in major rivers. The weather department said monsoon activity was “fully active” across Bihar, with light to moderate rainfall reported in most areas and heavy showers at isolated places.
According to the forecast, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are likely over north-west, north-central, north-east and south-east parts of the state during the next seven days.
The department said the maximum temperature may rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius over the next two days, while minimum temperatures are likely to remain largely unchanged during the next five days.
Several districts have been placed under heavy rainfall alerts on specific days. On September 4, heavy rain is likely in West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj and Siwan. West Champaran, Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur and Samastipur are likely to receive heavy showers on September 6.
Supaul and Kishanganj are under heavy rain alert for September 7, while West Champaran, Gopalganj and Siwan are again likely to experience heavy rainfall on September 9.
The weather department’s latest bulletin also highlighted significant rainfall during the previous 24 hours. Isolated heavy rain was recorded in Purnia, Banka, Bhojpur and Patna. Bhawanipur recorded the highest rainfall at 98.6 mm, followed by Bausi with 88.2 mm, Banka with 86.8 mm and Piro with 72.0 mm.
Bhabua recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 34.2 degrees Celsius, while Arwal recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 24.6 degrees Celsius. Strong winds reaching 52 kmph were recorded in Kishanganj.
With thunderstorms and lightning forecast in several regions, authorities have urged residents to exercise extreme caution during adverse weather conditions.
The weather advisory asked people to “stay in safe, permanent houses during bad weather” and avoid venturing into open areas during thunderstorms and lightning.
People have also been advised to “avoid open fields during bad weather” and seek shelter in permanent structures when lightning occurs. Residents should maintain a safe distance from tall trees, electricity poles, power lines and electrical conductors.
The authorities have further warned people against entering waterlogged areas or locations vulnerable to flash floods. The advisory assumes added significance as several districts are already witnessing rising river levels and flood-related concerns.
Residents have been urged to closely follow weather alerts and local administration advisories, particularly during periods of lightning, strong winds and intense rainfall.
