Guwahati, Dec 24: Seven Bangladeshi nationals were detained near the India–Bangladesh international border in Assam’s Sribhumi district, officials said on Monday, triggering renewed scrutiny of border security arrangements along the sensitive stretch.

The group was intercepted by members of the Village Defence Party (VDP) during routine patrolling at Manatoli village under the Mahishasan border belt.

Officials said the individuals had crossed into Indian territory from the Deutali border area of Bangladesh before being stopped by the VDP.

The detainees were later handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF) and local police for verification and further legal action.

Authorities did not disclose their identities. According to official sources, the same group had been deported to Bangladesh on December 19 but allegedly re-entered Indian territory within days, raising concerns over repeated breaches along the border.

Officials said an inquiry would be conducted to ascertain the circumstances that led to the repeated crossings.

Existing surveillance and monitoring mechanisms in the area are also being reviewed to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The India–Bangladesh border in Assam is considered vulnerable due to difficult terrain and porous stretches, often posing challenges for effective monitoring despite joint efforts by security agencies.
