Jammu, Dec 16: A policeman was killed and a terrorist is believed to have been injured in a gunfight with security forces in a remote forest village of Udhampur district in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday evening, officials said.
The encounter broke out around 6 pm at village Soan in the Majalta area after security forces launched a search operation following specific intelligence about the presence of three terrorists, suspected to be linked to Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), they said.
A joint team of the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Special Operations Group (SOG), the Army and the CRPF engaged the terrorists, leading to an exchange of fire in which one SOG jawan sustained injuries and later succumbed, the officials said.
One terrorist was also believed to have been injured in the initial gunfight, they added.
Firing later stopped and the operation was suspended for the night due to darkness and the difficult terrain. However, the entire area has been put under a tight security cordon and all escape routes have been sealed to prevent the terrorists from fleeing.
The search operation will resume with the first light of day on Tuesday, the officials said.
