Haryana DGP flags misuse of police security, 72 lose cover

Chandigarh, Dec 13:
Haryana Director General of Police O.P. Singh has ordered strict action against individuals who flaunt police security in public places such as malls, cinemas, weddings and funerals, directing officials to blacklist such “fukre log”, police said on Thursday.

Following a district-level review of threat perception across the state, security cover has been withdrawn from 72 individuals, while over 200 police personnel, including personal security officers (PSOs), have been recalled from security duties, they said.

In a letter addressed to senior police officials, Singh said police manpower should not be wasted on “useless work” when vacancies exist in the force. He also stressed that legal action should be taken against people who harbour or encourage criminals and later seek police protection by claiming threat to their lives.

The DGP said security should be provided only to genuine, law-abiding citizens after proper vetting and a CID-based threat assessment. He issued guidelines asking officers to maintain regular contact with persons facing genuine threats, provide gun licences and training, offer preventive guidance and ensure personal security is given only when absolutely necessary.

Singh also ordered a weekly review of all security deployments, saying the primary responsibility of the police was crime control and excessive deployment for personal security weakens overall public safety.

Referring to the ongoing Operation Hotspot Domination, the DGP said police teams have raided an average of around 800 locations daily over the past 10 days, leading to the arrest of a large number of drug addicts, gamblers, alcoholics and vagrants, demonstrating an effective police presence on the ground.

He further directed strict action against criminals, including confiscation of properties, demolition of illegal encroachments, seizure of passports, updating of history sheets and close monitoring of their contacts. Absconding criminals should be declared proclaimed offenders, with property confiscation and issuance of lookout and red corner notices to prevent them from fleeing the country, he said.

Several leaders and associates of the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) were among those who lost security cover, including youth wing president Digvijay Chautala, former deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala’s father-in-law Paramjit Singh Ahlawat, and party office-bearer Devender Kadyan, police said.

Haryanvi singer Rahul Fazilpuria and JJP youth leader Vinesha Gurjar were also among those whose security was withdrawn.

The move has triggered a political backlash, with Digvijay Chautala criticising the DGP and alleging political motives behind the withdrawal of security cover.
