Karur, India, September 29: The death toll from a stampede at a political rally led by Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district has climbed to 41 after a 60-year-old woman died of her injuries, hospital authorities said on Monday.
The woman, identified as Suguna, had been receiving intensive care at the Karur Government Medical College Hospital since the crush on Saturday evening. She succumbed late on Sunday, officials said.
According to government sources, the dead include 18 women, 14 men and nine children, among them five girls.
The stampede occurred during a rally organised by Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which has recently gained traction ahead of state elections.
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court is scheduled to hear a petition filed by TVK on Monday afternoon regarding the incident. Allegations have been raised against the state government and police over lapses in crowd management.
Authorities have yet to provide a final account of the number of people injured in the surge.
