GUWAHATI, June 2 – The flood situation in the northeastern Indian state of Assam remained critical on Monday as rising river levels and continued rainfall affected more than 400,000 people across 15 districts, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

Two additional deaths were reported in Cachar and Sribhumi districts, taking the total number of casualties from floods and landslides this year to 10. The administration has opened 155 relief camps and distribution centres in 12 districts, currently sheltering over 10,000 displaced individuals.

Cachar is the worst-hit district, with over 100,000 people impacted, followed by 85,000 in Sribhumi and 62,000 in Nagaon. In total, 764 villages are submerged and more than 3,500 hectares of cropland have been damaged.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to extremely heavy rainfall in several areas of Assam over the coming days, warning of worsening conditions in low-lying and riverbank regions. “The situation remains critical, and we are prepared for intensified response,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday evening.

Major rivers across the state are flowing above danger levels, including the Brahmaputra at Dibrugarh and Nimatighat, and its tributaries Dhansiri, Kopili, Barak, Kushiyara, and Katakhal in various locations.

Relief efforts are ongoing, with the state distributing more than 1,090 quintals of rice, 284 quintals of dal, 952 quintals of salt, and over 4,700 litres of mustard oil in the past 24 hours alone. A helicopter from the Indian Air Force rescued 14 stranded individuals near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border on Sunday.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Sarma to review the situation and assured the state of full central support, officials said. Transportation services, including road, rail, and ferry, have been disrupted in several flood-affected regions.
