Swiss glacier collapse sparks alarm over climate-driven permafrost thaw

BLATTEN, May 30 – A massive glacial collapse buried most of a Swiss alpine village this week, reigniting concerns over the growing threat posed by climate change to the stability of mountain regions.

The Birch Glacier gave way on Wednesday afternoon, sending a torrent of ice, rock, and mud into the village of Blatten in the canton of Valais. Nearly 90% of the village was submerged. Authorities confirmed that all 300 residents were safely evacuated following a timely geological alert.

Glaciologists say the collapse is the latest warning sign of the destabilizing effects of rising global temperatures on alpine landscapes.

“This is not just a glacial event—it’s a climate event,” said one researcher involved in the early warning system. “Permafrost, which acts as the natural glue holding these mountains together, is thawing rapidly.” Permafrost, the frozen ground typically found above 2,500 meters, binds rock faces and glacial masses. As it melts, the stability of slopes diminishes, increasing the risk of landslides, rockfalls, and catastrophic glacial failures.

Data from the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research shows that glaciers in Switzerland lost roughly 10% of their volume between 2022 and 2023—one of the steepest declines on record. A further 2.5% loss occurred over the past year. Since 1900, the Alps have warmed by about 2 degrees Celsius, nearly double the global average, resulting in a 50% reduction in glacier mass.

The collapse in Blatten follows several similar incidents in recent years, including a 2017 landslide in Bondo that killed eight hikers and a rockfall near Brienz in 2023. While scientists overwhelmingly attribute the growing frequency of such disasters to climate change, some caution that natural geological processes—such as mountain erosion and tectonic shifts—can also contribute.

Nonetheless, the role of permafrost thaw as a climate feedback loop is drawing increasing scrutiny. As frozen ground releases trapped greenhouse gases, it could accelerate global warming further. “This is not an isolated event,” said a climatologist at ETH Zurich. “It’s a symptom of a broader crisis unfolding in the Alps and mountain regions worldwide.”
