Dehradun, April 16: A 20-year-old student from Jharkhand is in critical condition after allegedly shooting himself in the head at a rented residence in Dehradun on Wednesday evening, police said.
The student, Shashi Shekhar Yadav, is a second-year B.Sc. Agriculture student at an institute in the Uttarakhand capital. Originally from Ramgarh district in Jharkhand, Yadav lived in Kotla Santor in the city’s Premnagar area with two other roommates, according to police.
“He was alone in his room at the time of the incident. An illegal pistol was recovered. Investigation is underway,” said Premnagar Police Station In-Charge Mohan Singh.
One roommate was out of town while the other was not home during the incident. Neighbours said they rushed to the room after hearing a gunshot and found Yadav unconscious and bleeding. He was taken to Doon Hospital and placed on a ventilator.
Police are examining Yadav’s mobile phone and personal items as part of the investigation. Preliminary reports suggest he may have been suffering from depression, though the motive behind the act has not been confirmed.
Authorities have contacted Yadav’s family, and the probe is ongoing.
