NEW DELHI, April 9 – India’s Cabinet on Wednesday approved the construction of a six-lane Zirakpur Bypass in the northern states of Punjab and Haryana, a 19.2-kilometre project aimed at decongesting key urban corridors and improving regional connectivity. The infrastructure project, cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will be built at a capital cost of ₹1,878.31 crore under the Hybrid Annuity Mode, the government said in a statement.

“The bypass will start at the junction with National Highway 7 (Zirakpur-Patiala) and end at the junction with National Highway 5 (Zirakpur-Parwanoo),” the release added. The alignment will also enhance links with NH-152. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decision during a media briefing at the National Media Centre in New Delhi.

The bypass is expected to significantly reduce congestion in the densely populated tri-city region of Zirakpur, Panchkula and Chandigarh. It will help divert traffic from Patiala, Delhi, and Mohali Aerocity, while providing direct and faster access to Himachal Pradesh.

Officials said the project is designed to cut travel time, improve safety, and facilitate smoother traffic flow along the heavily used National Highways 7, 5, and 152. India has been ramping up investments in road infrastructure as part of a broader push to boost economic growth, with key projects targeting faster movement of goods and improved interstate connectivity.
