New Delhi, Feb 8: The Union Cabinet on Friday approved a three-year extension for the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK), extending its tenure until March 31, 2028. The extension will cost approximately ₹51 crore, according to a government note.
The Commission’s tenure was initially set to expire on March 31, 2025. Its key responsibilities include recommending programs to eliminate inequities in the status, facilities, and opportunities for safai karamcharis. Additionally, it evaluates the implementation of schemes related to the social and economic rehabilitation of safai karamcharis and scavengers.
Established in 1994 under the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis Act, 1993, the NCSK operated as a statutory body until the Act lapsed in 2004. Since then, the Commission has functioned as a non-statutory body, with its scope expanded under The Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and Their Rehabilitation Act, 2013.
The Commission also investigates non-implementation of laws and schemes for safai karamcharis, addressing such matters with relevant authorities. This extension reaffirms the government’s commitment to improving conditions and addressing inequities faced by safai karamcharis.
