Mumbai, Feb 03 : A 55-year-old woman from Haridwar was allegedly raped inside an empty train compartment at Bandra Terminus late Saturday night, railway officials said. The accused, identified as a porter, reportedly took advantage of the woman being alone after other passengers had disembarked.
The woman had traveled to Mumbai with a relative, who left her briefly to attend to some work. During this time, she rested on the platform before entering the empty train compartment, officials said. The accused allegedly attacked her inside the train.
By the time the woman’s relative returned, the porter had fled. The relative immediately reported the incident to the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP). Acting on the complaint, police reviewed CCTV footage from the station and managed to track down the accused. The porter was arrested and later remanded to police custody by a local court.
An internal inquiry has been ordered to investigate the absence of security personnel at Bandra Terminus at the time of the incident, officials said. “We are looking into why no security personnel were present at the spot,” an official stated.
The investigation is ongoing.
