New Delhi, Sept 24: Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik on Thursday held a bilateral meeting with a delegation from the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE), with discussions focusing on energy security, clean energy technologies and cooperation in the power sector.
The meeting reviewed ongoing collaboration between India and the European Union in the electricity sector and explored areas for expanding cooperation. Discussions covered the energy transition, low-carbon development, nuclear power, carbon markets and emerging technologies.
Naik highlighted the transformation of India’s power sector and the government’s efforts to develop a reliable and future-ready energy system.He pointed to progress in expanding non-fossil fuel-based power capacity, strengthening transmission and distribution networks, adopting energy storage and smart-grid solutions, and promoting nuclear power, energy efficiency and green hydrogen.
The two sides also discussed potential cooperation in emerging areas, including long-duration energy storage, digital power-system technologies, green hydrogen and carbon capture, utilisation and storage.Nuclear technologies, including small modular reactors, were also discussed as part of the broader energy cooperation agenda.The meeting also covered developments in carbon markets and changes in carbon-pricing mechanisms.
The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) of the European Union was among the issues discussed.The two sides exchanged views on ongoing initiatives and opportunities to deepen cooperation, including progress in the India-EU Free Trade Agreement negotiations.
India and the European Union reiterated the importance of cooperation in the energy and electricity sectors as a key component of their broader partnership.
Both sides agreed on the importance of continued dialogue, exchange of expertise and greater technical and institutional cooperation to support secure, resilient and sustainable energy systems.
