New Delhi, September 17: Veteran Kannada actor Anant Nag has been chosen for the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contribution to Indian cinema, making him only the second artist from Karnataka to receive the country’s highest cinema honour after Dr Rajkumar.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, with the award recognising Nag’s cinematic journey spanning more than five decades and over 300 films across Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil and Marathi cinema.
Nag made his acting debut with the 1973 Kannada film Sankalpa. More than 250 of his performances have been in Kannada films. He also gained popularity on television with the Doordarshan series Malgudi Days.
His notable films include Bayalu Daari (1976), Kanneshwara Rama (1977), K.G.F: Chapter 1 (2018) and Gaalipata 2 (2022).
The actor has received six Filmfare Awards South and five Karnataka State Film Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award. The Phalke honour comes a year after he was conferred the Padma Bhushan.
The award will be presented at the 72nd National Film Awards Ceremony in Kevadia, Gujarat, on September 22. It comprises a Swarna Kamal medallion, a shawl and a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh.
Expressing happiness over the honour, Nag said, “It’s a great feeling to receive this honour.” He added, “I dedicate this award to Kannadigas and Karnataka.”
The Press Information Bureau said the award was being conferred on Nag for his “outstanding and invaluable contribution” to the growth and development of Indian cinema and an illustrious cinematic journey that has inspired generations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Nag, praising his versatility and performances. “In whichever role he has played, he brought rare depth and authenticity,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister also said Nag’s “natural acting, remarkable versatility, and exceptional artistic talent” had left an indelible mark on Indian cinema, particularly the Kannada film industry.
Nag, who has also been involved in politics, has served as an MLC, MLA and minister.
