New Delhi, Sept 14: The recently concluded BRICS Summit in New Delhi offered not only a platform for discussions on global governance and international cooperation but also several informal moments among participating world leaders.
A video featuring previously unseen footage from the summit has drawn attention to the more relaxed interactions between leaders during the two-day gathering at Bharat Mandapam.One of the prominent moments shows Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The three leaders are seen seated together and apparently having tea while engaged in conversation.The footage also captures Modi interacting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and other international dignitaries.
In another segment, Modi is seen accompanying leaders around the summit venue and highlighting cultural displays, including rangoli and paintings.
A separate clip shows Modi and Putin travelling together in an elevator, accompanied by members of their security teams.Other participating leaders also appear in the footage exchanging handshakes, hugs and smiles, offering a glimpse into the informal interactions that took place alongside the summit’s formal diplomatic engagements.
The informal exchanges come against the backdrop of significant discussions among BRICS members on global governance, multilateralism and international institutional reform.
During the summit, BRICS leaders adopted the New Delhi Declaration, which included a call for greater representation of developing countries in global institutions.China and Russia, both permanent members of the UN Security Council, reiterated their support for India’s and Brazil’s aspirations to play a larger role in the United Nations, including the Security Council.
The declaration also backed efforts to make the UN Security Council more representative, democratic, effective and efficient, with stronger representation for developing nations.
The combination of formal agreements and informal interactions at the summit highlighted the dual nature of modern diplomacy, where negotiations on major global issues are often accompanied by personal exchanges between leaders.
The New Delhi summit thus provided India an opportunity to advance its diplomatic priorities while bringing together leaders from diverse political and economic backgrounds for dialogue on the future of global cooperation.
