New Delhi, Sept 14: A Delhi Police constable deployed for security duties during the BRICS Summit in the national capital has been suspended after videos allegedly showing firearms and a sniper rifle were posted on social media, officials said.
The constable, identified as Deepak Bangar, was reportedly assigned to security duties during the recently concluded international summit. The matter came to the attention of senior police officials after videos from his Instagram account showed him with official weapons and material linked to his deployment.
In one of the videos, Bangar was allegedly seen in civilian clothing while displaying his BRICS Summit 2026 identification card and holding a service pistol.
Parts of the hotel premises and the surrounding area were also reportedly visible.Another video allegedly showed him viewing through the scope of a sniper rifle from a terrace, with several structures in the surrounding area visible in the background.
The posts triggered concerns because the officer was deployed as part of security arrangements for a major international event attended by senior foreign leaders and other dignitaries.Police subsequently removed Bangar from BRICS-related duties and suspended him with immediate effect. He was later sent back to the Northwest District.
A departmental inquiry has been ordered to establish the circumstances under which the videos were recorded and uploaded and to determine whether any security or service rules were violated.Officials said further disciplinary action would be considered on the basis of the inquiry’s findings.
The incident has also highlighted concerns surrounding the use of social media by personnel deployed at sensitive locations. Videos or photographs recorded during high-security assignments can potentially disclose information about security positions, surrounding infrastructure or operational arrangements.
The case comes after heightened security measures were put in place across New Delhi for the BRICS Summit, which brought together leaders and senior representatives from several major emerging economies.
The police inquiry will now determine the extent of the alleged lapse and whether additional action is warranted against the constable.
