Modi, Ramaphosa discuss strengthening India-South Africa strategic partnership

New Delhi, September 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in New Delhi on Sunday on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit, with the two leaders reviewing bilateral cooperation and discussing ways to further deepen their strategic partnership.

During the meeting, Modi and Ramaphosa took stock of progress across various areas of engagement between the two countries and exchanged views on strengthening their broad-based strategic relationship.

The leaders underlined the enduring nature of India-South Africa ties, which have developed on the foundation of shared historical experiences, cultural links, expanding economic relations and close contacts between the people of the two countries.

They also discussed a range of international and regional issues of common interest and agreed to maintain close coordination at multilateral platforms.Wildlife conservation also figured in the discussions, with Modi highlighting cooperation between the two countries in the transfer of cheetahs from South Africa to India as part of India’s efforts to restore the species.

The Prime Minister invited South Africa to consider joining the International Big Cat Alliance, an initiative aimed at promoting international cooperation for the conservation of big cats.Ramaphosa expressed his appreciation to Modi for the warm welcome extended to him and his delegation during their visit.

He also thanked the Prime Minister for hosting the BRICS Summit and for the arrangements made for the gathering.The meeting comes as India and South Africa continue to strengthen cooperation across bilateral and multilateral platforms, including through their engagement within BRICS.
