Hajipur, Sep 8: One person died and another went missing after a boat carrying 11 people capsized in the Ganga in Bihar’s Vaishali district on Tuesday, officials said.
The incident took place in the Terasia Diara area, where the boat reportedly struck a boulder submerged under floodwaters, lost balance and overturned, they said.
The deceased was identified as 20-year-old Chandan Kumar. Nine people were rescued safely, with some of those on board managing to swim to the shore.
District Magistrate Varsha Singh and Superintendent of Police Shubank Mishra said a search operation was underway to trace the missing person.
“A search operation was underway to trace the missing person,” Singh said.
Shubank Mishra said rescue teams were continuing efforts to locate the person who remained unaccounted for.
The boat accident comes as the flood situation in Bihar continued to deteriorate. More than 35 lakh people across 14 districts have been affected by floods, authorities said.
The Ganga has also crossed its highest flood level at Sultanganj in Bhagalpur district, prompting authorities to issue alerts for areas downstream of the river.
Rescue and relief teams have been deployed in affected areas as authorities monitor the rising water levels and assess the situation.
The latest incident has highlighted the risks faced by people using boats for movement amid widespread flooding in the state.
