Ranchi, Aug. 29: The Jharkhand Health Department has stepped up surveillance and hospital preparedness after eight people tested positive for Influenza A (H1N1), with authorities stressing that the measures are precautionary and there is no cause for panic.
Health officials have directed civil surgeons, medical colleges and district surveillance teams to remain vigilant, identify suspected cases at an early stage and ensure adequate arrangements for the treatment of patients.State National Health Mission Director Shashi Prakash Jha said the advisory was intended to strengthen public awareness and preparedness.
Officials said that 11 samples were tested at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi, with eight returning positive results for the H1N1 virus.The department has instructed district hospitals and medical colleges to earmark isolation facilities with a minimum of 10 beds for suspected and confirmed influenza patients.
Healthcare institutions have also been asked to maintain sufficient stocks of personal protective equipment, masks, essential medicines and other critical resources, including oxygen support and ventilators.Mandatory screening has also been emphasised for patients reporting flu-like symptoms or severe respiratory infections at hospital outpatient departments.
Testing facilities for H1N1 and H3N2 influenza are available at RIMS in Ranchi and MGM Medical College and Hospital in Jamshedpur, according to the health department.The state is monitoring cases of influenza-like illness and severe acute respiratory infections under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme.
Health authorities are also ensuring regular reporting through the Integrated Health Information Platform to track the situation.Officials said young children, senior citizens, pregnant women and people suffering from serious long-term illnesses may be more vulnerable to complications and should receive particular attention.
The development comes amid reports of seasonal influenza cases, including H1N1 and H3N2 infections, in several parts of the country.Jharkhand health authorities have urged residents not to ignore fever or respiratory symptoms and to seek timely medical advice.
The department said its current focus is on early detection, prompt treatment and strengthening healthcare preparedness to prevent any wider spread of infection.
