New Delhi, Aug 27: India will host the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13, bringing together leaders of BRICS member and partner countries as well as invited nations for discussions on global and regional issues.The summit will be held at Bharat Mandapam as India concludes a year of activities under its 2026 BRICS Chairship, which began on January 1.
India has adopted the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” for its chairship. The theme reflects the government’s emphasis on a people-oriented approach to international cooperation and the principle of “Humanity First.”During the two-day meeting, leaders are expected to review cooperation within the grouping and discuss ways to strengthen collaboration in areas of shared interest.
Regional and international developments are also likely to feature prominently in the deliberations.India’s year-long chairship has included an extensive programme of meetings and engagements across the country. More than 350 BRICS-related meetings and high-level engagements have been organised in over 25 cities, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
The activities have covered the three broad pillars of BRICS cooperation — political and security issues, economic and financial cooperation, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges.India has also encouraged greater participation from business communities and civil society through business-to-business and people-to-people initiatives.
The focus has been on converting cooperation within the grouping into practical outcomes with a direct development impact.The upcoming summit is expected to provide an opportunity for BRICS leaders to assess the progress made during India’s chairship and establish priorities for future cooperation.
India, a founding member of BRICS, has previously chaired the grouping in 2012, 2016 and 2021. The 2026 chairship is therefore the country’s fourth stint at the helm of the grouping.The year also marks two decades since BRICS was established, adding significance to the summit and India’s leadership of the grouping.
With the leaders’ meeting approaching, India is expected to use the summit to further strengthen cooperation among BRICS countries while advancing discussions on issues of common global and developmental interest.
