Patna, Aug 21: RJD Working President and Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav on Friday launched a broad attack on the Bihar government over the state’s financial position, alleging that the NDA regime is pushing the state towards a “serious economic crisis” amid rising debt and a widening fiscal deficit.

Tejashwi claimed that Bihar’s fiscal deficit stood at 5.8 per cent of GSDP in 2025-26, which he described as the highest among major states.

He also alleged that the state’s total public debt has increased more than fourfold and questioned why the treasury was facing a shortage of funds despite what he termed record borrowing by the government.

Tejashwi alleged that the government lacks a concrete strategy to manage expenditure, debt and the fiscal deficit, while also failing to take adequate steps to increase revenue.

He claimed the alleged financial strain was affecting government employees, pensioners, contractors, students and development projects.

According to Tejashwi, government employees are not receiving salaries on time, while social security pension payments and dues owed to contractors are also being delayed. He further claimed that inadequate funds were affecting various development projects.

Turning his attention to students, Tejashwi alleged that the amount available under the Student Credit Card Scheme has been reduced and scholarships are being discontinued or suspended.

He warned that cuts to student support programmes could directly affect Bihar’s youth and their educational opportunities.

Tejashwi also accused the NDA government of promoting “organized corruption” and questioned where the state’s money was being spent when debt was increasing and revenue remained weak.

He criticised Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, alleging that the chief minister lacked sufficient understanding of expenditure management, debt management and fiscal-deficit management.

Tejashwi said Bihar was facing a worrying fiscal situation and questioned why the state’s treasury was allegedly empty despite the sharp increase in borrowing.

The RJD leader also alleged that the government had no concrete plan to bring the fiscal deficit under control or strengthen revenue generation.

The claims made by Tejashwi Yadav could not be independently verified from the information available, and no response from the Bihar government has been provided in the report.

The allegations come as Bihar’s financial management becomes a political flashpoint, with the opposition linking the state’s fiscal position to delays in payments, funding concerns and alleged reductions in student welfare schemes.
