New Delhi, Aug 20: Prudential HCL Health Insurance Limited, a standalone health insurance company backed by Prudential plc and the HCL Group, on Thursday announced the commencement of its business operations in India, marking the entry of the joint venture into the country’s rapidly growing health insurance market.

The company is a 70:30 joint venture between Prudential plc (UK) and the HCL Group and received its Certificate of Registration from the regulator on July 1, 2026, enabling it to commence health insurance operations.

Prudential Health India is entering a market estimated at around USD 16 billion in gross written premiums in FY 2026, and plans to build its business around customer-first innovation, artificial intelligence-enabled experiences and personalised health protection.

As part of its initial offering, the insurer will provide customers access to a network of more than 12,000 hospitals. Its omnichannel model will combine personal advice through an agency network with an AI-enabled direct-to-consumer platform.

The company said the model is aimed at simplifying the process of selecting health coverage, managing policies and accessing support when required.

Naveen Tahilyani, Regional CEO, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, India, Africa; Group Agency and Health, Prudential plc, said India was a “strategically important market” for Prudential, citing strong macroeconomic fundamentals, rising healthcare demand and scope for innovation in customer experience.

“With Prudential Health India, we are building a differentiated health insurance business focused on providing a simpler, more accessible and seamless customer experience,” Tahilyani said.

He said the partnership would combine Prudential’s insurance and health capabilities with HCL Group’s technology and healthcare expertise to help more Indian families navigate their healthcare journey with confidence.

Amit Dave, MD and CEO Designate, Prudential Health India, said the company aims to move beyond the traditional role of an insurer and support customers throughout their health journey.

“We are committed to building insurance solutions that safeguard people against unforeseen health risks and ensure they are never alone in critical health moments,” Dave said.

He said the company’s focus would be on providing intelligent and proactive support before, during and after a health issue, with the aim of making healthcare “more accessible, seamless and reassuring”.

Dave also said the company remained committed to supporting the government’s vision of “Insurance for All by 2047.”

Shikhar Malhotra, Executive Director, Vama Sundari Investments (Delhi) Private Ltd, said HCL’s entry into health insurance was a natural extension of its capabilities in healthcare technology, digital transformation and innovation.

“As healthcare becomes increasingly consumer-led and technology-enabled, we see a significant opportunity to bring these strengths to an area that is fundamental to the health and financial security of millions of Indians,” Malhotra said.

The company said the partnership brings together Prudential’s expertise in insurance and protection and HCL’s capabilities in technology, digital transformation and healthcare.

Prudential Health India said its broader objective is to create a more customer-centric, technology-enabled and inclusive health insurance ecosystem, with simpler, personalised and responsive protection for Indian families.
