Hajipur, Aug 14: A police team was allegedly attacked by a mob of around 200 people in Bihar’s Vaishali district, with the group helping an arrested accused escape from custody, officials said.
The incident took place in the Mahnar area after police received information about the presence of a man wanted in connection with several criminal cases, including a case involving weapons.
Acting on the information, a police team reached the location and apprehended the accused, officials said.
However, shortly after the arrest, a large group gathered at the spot and allegedly began pelting the police personnel with stones. Amid the ensuing commotion, the accused was freed from custody and managed to flee, police said.Officials further alleged that some members of the group later fired several rounds at the residence of a local watchman, apparently in an attempt to intimidate him.
A case has been registered in connection with the incident, and police teams are conducting raids to identify and apprehend those allegedly involved in the attack and the accused’s escape.
A video purportedly showing the incident has also surfaced on social media. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident as part of their investigation.
Further details, including the identity and whereabouts of the escaped accused and the number of people detained in connection with the case, are awaited.
