Patna, Aug 10: Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Sunday called upon citizens to make environmental conservation a public movement and adopt sustainable practices as part of their everyday lives.The Chief Minister made the appeal while participating in a tree plantation programme at the Lok Seva Awas complex in Patna on the occasion of Bihar Earth Day 2026.
He planted saplings of Kalpataru and Rudraksha and urged people to actively participate in efforts to protect the environment.The state government also announced an 11-point environmental pledge focusing on practical measures for conservation and sustainable living.Under the initiative, citizens have been encouraged to plant at least one tree every year and take responsibility for its protection and upkeep.
The pledge also calls for keeping ponds, rivers, lakes and other water sources free from pollution.The campaign stresses the need to conserve water by avoiding unnecessary consumption and turning off taps after use. People have also been urged to use electricity responsibly by switching off lights and fans when they are not required.Cleanliness forms another key component of the campaign.
The government has appealed to people to keep their homes, schools and surrounding areas clean and ensure that waste is disposed of at designated places.The initiative also seeks to reduce the use of plastic and polythene. Citizens have been encouraged to opt for cloth or paper bags and motivate others to adopt alternatives to single-use plastic.
The pledge includes a sanitation component as well, urging people to avoid open defecation and use toilets.The Chief Minister said environmental conservation would become more effective when citizens adopt these measures collectively and integrate them into their daily routines.
Senior officials, including Environment, Forest and Climate Change Department Additional Chief Secretary Anand Kishore and Chief Minister’s Secretary Sanjay Kumar Singh, were also present during the programme.
The initiative aims to encourage greater public participation in protecting Bihar’s natural resources and promoting a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
