New Delhi, Aug 10: The Opposition on Monday stepped up its demand for an explanation from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over alleged police action against protesting students, raising the possibility of fresh disruptions in Parliament during the Monsoon Session.
The issue has emerged as a major point of confrontation between the government and Opposition parties, with lawmakers seeking accountability over allegations of excessive force used during student protests.Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi backed the protesting students and said their concerns deserved to be heard.
Referring to a student he met during a programme in Prayagraj, Gandhi said the issue represented a wider concern about the functioning of the system.The Congress leader also demanded accountability for the alleged use of force, including claims of lathi-charge and the use of pellet guns against students.
He maintained that the Home Minister should respond to the matter in Parliament.The Opposition has already raised the issue of alleged police action during the ongoing session, with leaders pressing the government to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incidents.
Meanwhile, the Congress has announced that it will oppose the proposed amendment to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA). Party leaders have indicated that they have reservations about the proposed changes and are expected to raise their objections when the legislation comes before Parliament.
The report also said that NCP (Sharad Pawar) faction MP Supriya Sule is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting is expected to cover issues concerning Maharashtra.The developments come as the government prepares to take up important legislative business in Parliament, while Opposition parties seek to press their demands on issues including student protests and proposed legislation.
The continuing differences between the government and Opposition are likely to keep the Monsoon Session politically charged, with both sides preparing for further debate on the issues.
