New Delhi, August 8 : A 70-year-old woman was killed after a speeding Mercedes collided head-on with a WagonR in Delhi’s Narela area on Saturday morning, police said.
The incident took place around 8 am near Himalaya Apartments in Mamurpur, according to preliminary information.
The deceased has been identified as Urmila, a local resident, officials said.
Police said the impact of the Mercedes-WagonR collision pushed the WagonR backwards into a three-wheeler loading van parked nearby. Urmila, who was out for a morning walk, became trapped between the vehicles and sustained critical injuries. She died at the spot.
The driver of the WagonR suffered minor injuries and was provided first aid.
The Mercedes was allegedly being driven at high speed by Shubham, the son of a Haryana Police sub-inspector. He was arrested from the spot, police said.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Police said the accused underwent a medical examination and the report is awaited to establish whether he was intoxicated.
Officials said the Mercedes belonged to a friend and had reportedly been borrowed by Shubham a day earlier.
A case under relevant sections, including causing death by negligence, is being registered. The victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
