New Delhi, Aug. 7: The Bihar government has announced a ₹1.40 lakh crore investment roadmap for the state’s power sector over the next five years, outlining plans to expand renewable energy, modernise electricity infrastructure and strengthen transmission and distribution networks.
The investment strategy was presented during the 7th CII International Energy Conference and Exhibition (IECE) 2026 in New Delhi, where the state invited domestic and international companies to explore opportunities across Bihar’s growing energy sector.
Addressing the conference, Bihar Energy Minister Shailesh Kumar said the state has made considerable progress in improving electricity access and is now focusing on building a reliable, technology-driven and sustainable power ecosystem.
He said the proposed investments are aimed at enhancing energy security while supporting industrial growth and economic development.According to the government, the planned investments will cover renewable energy generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure, battery energy storage systems, pumped storage projects, Green Energy Corridors, smart grid technologies and digital transformation initiatives.
The roadmap also includes greater deployment of rooftop solar systems, expansion of solar parks and implementation of central government programmes such as PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and PM-KUSUM to increase the share of clean energy in the state’s power mix.
Officials highlighted recent improvements in Bihar’s power distribution sector, stating that electricity distribution companies have reported profits exceeding ₹2,300 crore.
Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses have been reduced to 11.54 per cent, while more than 92 lakh smart prepaid electricity meters have been installed to improve operational efficiency and consumer services.
Energy Secretary and Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited, Ajay Yadav, said investment opportunities are available across electricity generation, transmission, distribution, information technology services and infrastructure maintenance.
To facilitate new projects, the state has introduced a Single Window Clearance System under which dedicated nodal officers assist investors in obtaining approvals and coordinating with government departments.
Officials said additional measures, including advance subsidy support, faster vendor payments and transparent regulatory mechanisms, have been introduced to strengthen investor confidence.
On the sidelines of the conference, Bihar representatives held discussions with leading energy companies on potential collaboration in renewable energy, grid modernisation, clean technologies and power infrastructure development.
The government said the proposed investments are expected to strengthen Bihar’s energy infrastructure, support industrial expansion and accelerate the state’s transition towards a cleaner and more resilient power sector.
