New Delhi, Aug. 7: Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya on Friday urged National Sports Federations (NSFs) to strengthen governance, ensure transparency in athlete selection and intensify efforts to eliminate doping as India prepares for a series of major international sporting events over the coming years.
Chairing the National Sports Federation Conclave 2026 in New Delhi, the minister reviewed the country’s preparedness for the Asian Games 2026, Los Angeles Olympics 2028 and Commonwealth Games 2030.
The meeting was attended by Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse, senior officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Sports Authority of India (SAI), and representatives of various National Sports Federations.
During the discussions, participants reviewed compliance with the National Sports Governance Act, 2025, examined governance standards across sports bodies and assessed the progress of preparations for upcoming international competitions.
Addressing the gathering, Mandaviya said athlete welfare must remain the highest priority for every organisation associated with Indian sports. He stressed that selection processes should be conducted fairly and transparently, suggesting that trials be recorded and monitored to enhance accountability and ensure equal opportunities for all athletes.
The minister also called for greater emphasis on creating year-round competitive opportunities through domestic leagues and tournaments, stating that regular competition is essential for improving performance and preparing athletes for international events.
Highlighting the need to combat doping, Mandaviya said a comprehensive approach is required to address the issue effectively. He noted that efforts should focus not only on athletes but also on those involved in the manufacture, supply and distribution of prohibited substances.
The government, he said, is working to strengthen the country’s anti-doping framework through policy reforms.The Union Minister further emphasised the importance of developing a strong pool of Indian coaches by providing advanced training and international exposure.
Building domestic coaching expertise, he said, would play a key role in producing world-class athletes and reducing long-term dependence on foreign coaching professionals.
Reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to improving sports administration, Mandaviya said the government would continue working closely with National Sports Federations to strengthen governance standards, improve transparency and support India’s preparations for future international sporting events.
