Patna, Aug. 6: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday conducted search operations at five locations in Bihar’s Munger district as part of a money laundering investigation linked to an alleged digital investment fraud that reportedly targeted investors with promises of guaranteed monthly income.
According to officials, the searches were carried out by the ED’s Patna Zonal Office under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The action follows an investigation into allegations that a private company operating in the Jamalpur area persuaded people to invest substantial amounts by offering what it described as a “digital job” with attractive financial returns.
Investigators alleged that participants were asked to invest a fixed amount and complete online tasks, including viewing a specified number of audio and video files each month. In return, they were reportedly promised a regular monthly income, along with additional incentives for higher participation and for referring new investors to the scheme.
Officials further alleged that rewards such as motorcycles and cars were offered to individuals who enrolled a large number of participants, encouraging the expansion of the network.
During the investigation, authorities found that the online platform used for the programme allegedly became slow and difficult to access, preventing many participants from completing the required tasks needed to qualify for payments. Investigators suspect this may have been done deliberately, resulting in investors being unable to receive the promised returns.
The Enforcement Directorate initiated its probe on the basis of a criminal case registered by Bihar Police. A First Information Report (FIR) was lodged in November 2024 at Munger Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and a chargesheet has since been filed.
Officials said the search operation was continuing at multiple premises linked to individuals associated with the case. Further investigation is underway to trace the flow of funds, identify the proceeds of crime and determine the involvement of other persons connected to the alleged fraud.
