New Delhi, Aug. 1 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Youth Centre – Viveka Memorial in Mysuru, Karnataka, describing it as a landmark institution that would inspire young Indians to dedicate themselves to nation-building and public service.
Addressing a large gathering after the inauguration, the Prime Minister paid tribute to Goddess Chamundeshwari and recalled the profound influence of the Ramakrishna Mission on his personal and spiritual journey. He said Mysuru has long been a centre of India’s cultural consciousness and praised the city for preserving its rich heritage, traditions and intellectual legacy.
Modi said the newly inaugurated Viveka Memorial would serve as a powerful platform for nurturing future generations inspired by the ideals of Swami Vivekananda. He noted that the philosopher-monk had embodied the spirit and consciousness of India and believed that education and youth empowerment were central to national development.
Referring to a historic episode from Swami Vivekananda’s life, the Prime Minister recalled how the then Maharaja of Mysuru recognised and supported the young monk before his global recognition, calling it an example of visionary leadership and faith in talent.
Highlighting the contribution of the Ramakrishna Mission over the past century, Modi praised its work in education, healthcare, disaster relief and social service. He said the institution had remained committed to the principle that true life is lived in the service of others.
The Prime Minister urged the new centre to develop a generation of youth committed to serving the nation and uplifting the poor. He said young people should aspire to place national interest above personal ambitions and work towards building a stronger and more inclusive India.
Emphasising India’s growing global role, Modi said Indian youth were today leading innovation, entrepreneurship and technological advancement across the world. He credited them for helping India emerge as one of the fastest-growing economies, a major startup hub and a global manufacturing centre.
He also highlighted India’s achievements in artificial intelligence, deep technology, space technology and innovation, saying the country’s demographic strength had become its biggest asset. Referring to the recent successful launch of a privately developed rocket, he said it reflected the confidence and capabilities of India’s young innovators.
The Prime Minister outlined the government’s efforts to strengthen the education sector, including the establishment of over 650 universities, 14,000 colleges, new IITs and IIMs, and a significant expansion in MBBS seats. He also highlighted the implementation of the National Education Policy, the development of PM SHRI Schools and the establishment of Atal Tinkering Labs to promote scientific thinking and innovation among students.
Modi said educational reforms were aimed at ensuring equal opportunities for all, citing the introduction of professional education in Indian languages and the opening of Sainik Schools and the National Defence Academy to girls as major milestones.
Highlighting the importance of sports in nation-building, he said initiatives such as Khelo India had created a strong sporting ecosystem, enabling athletes from smaller towns to achieve international success.
The Prime Minister also urged citizens to contribute towards environmental conservation, water preservation and the promotion of local products under the “Vocal for Local” campaign. He encouraged young people to reconnect with Karnataka’s rich literary heritage and reduce excessive dependence on digital screens.
Concluding his address, Modi said fulfilling Swami Vivekananda’s dream of a strong, self-reliant and spiritually awakened India was the responsibility of the present generation. He expressed confidence that the Viveka Memorial would emerge as a vibrant centre for youth leadership, character building and national service.
