New Delhi, Aug. 1 : A woman was killed after allegedly being run over by a Delhi Cluster Bus in the Sultanpuri area on Saturday, triggering protests by angry residents who vandalised the vehicle following the accident.
The deceased has been identified as Indra, a resident of Sultanpuri.
According to police, the incident occurred when the woman was crossing the road after alighting from a Route No. 114 Cluster Bus. Eyewitnesses alleged that the driver suddenly accelerated the vehicle, causing the woman to fall beneath the bus. She died on the spot due to her injuries.
The bus driver fled the scene immediately after the accident.
The incident sparked tension in the area as local residents gathered at the spot and damaged the bus in protest over the woman’s death.
Police personnel from Sultanpuri Police Station reached the spot, dispersed the crowd and brought the situation under control. The body was shifted to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital for post-mortem examination.
A case has been registered, and police have launched a search operation to trace and arrest the absconding driver.
Officials said CCTV footage from the area and eyewitness accounts are being examined as part of the investigation to ascertain the exact sequence of events.
Further investigation into the incident is underway.
