Madhubani, Aug. 1: Security has been significantly stepped up along the India-Nepal border in Bihar’s Madhubani district following communal violence in neighbouring Nepal that has claimed at least three lives and triggered curfews in border areas, officials said on Saturday.
As a precautionary measure, Bihar Police have intensified surveillance, vehicle checking and search operations on all major as well as alternative border routes. Additional security personnel have also been deployed at border police stations to prevent any spillover of tension into Indian territory.
The heightened vigil follows communal clashes that erupted last weekend in Nepal’s Sunsari district in Koshi Province over a dispute regarding the use of loudspeakers during celebrations by two religious communities. The violence left at least three people dead and dozens injured, including in police firing, according to reports.
The unrest subsequently spread to other parts of Nepal, prompting authorities to impose curfews, prohibitory orders and reinforce security deployment. An indefinite curfew has also been enforced in parts of Saptari district in Madhesh Province, which shares an international border with India.
Officials said the enhanced security arrangements in Madhubani are aimed at maintaining peace and ensuring that the unrest across the border does not affect law and order in Bihar.
An official statement said, “Intensive surveillance, vehicle checking and search operations are being carried out on all major and alternative border routes.” It added that “Additional security personnel have been deployed at border police stations.”
Appealing for public cooperation, Bihar Police urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid spreading misinformation.
“People should comply with administrative directives, not pay heed to rumours and immediately report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station,” the police said.
Authorities said the situation is being closely monitored and security agencies remain on alert along the international border.
