Gulveer creates history, Harjinder claims silver at commonwealth games

Glasgow, July 29: Indian athletes Gulveer Singh and Harjinder Kaur won silver medals in athletics and weightlifting, respectively, at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, taking India’s overall medal count to 12.Gulveer produced a landmark performance in the men’s 10,000-metre race, finishing second with a time of 27 minutes and 49.78 seconds at the Scotstoun Stadium.

The reigning Asian champion became the first Indian athlete to win a medal in the men’s 10,000 metres at the Commonwealth Games.

Australia’s Ky Robinson secured the gold medal.In weightlifting, Harjinder Kaur finished second in the women’s 69kg competition after recording a total lift of 227kg.The 29-year-old added a silver medal to the bronze she won at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, making it her second successive medal at the multi-sport event.

Her performance also helped India secure medals in seven of the eight weightlifting events in which the country competed.Following the two silver medals, India’s tally stood at 12 medals, comprising two gold, seven silver and three bronze.President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan congratulated Gulveer and Harjinder on their achievements.

India also received a boost in boxing, with four athletes advancing to the semifinals and securing at least bronze medals.

Lovlina Borgohain became the first Indian boxer to guarantee a medal in the women’s 75kg category. Preeti Pawar also reached the semifinals in the women’s 54kg division.Priya Ghanghas entered the women’s 60kg semifinals after defeating Scotland’s Niamh Mitchell by a 4-1 decision in the quarterfinals.

Jadumani Singh Mandengbam progressed to the semifinals of the men’s 55kg event, taking India’s number of assured boxing medals to four.

The Indian boxers will now compete in the semifinals, where victories would move them into the final and guarantee at least silver medals.
