GLASGOW, July 27: Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu clinched India’s first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, producing a record-breaking performance in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event to lead the country’s medal surge in Glasgow.
The 31-year-old lifted a combined total of 190kg, setting new Commonwealth Games records with 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk. The victory also marked her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal after triumphs in 2018 and 2022.
President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Chanu on her achievement. The President praised her exceptional grit, determination and excellence, while the Vice President lauded her dedication, resilience and consistency.

The Prime Minister described the triumph as another glorious chapter in Indian weightlifting and said Chanu continues to inspire the nation.India further strengthened its medal tally with two silver medals in weightlifting. Chanambam Rishikanta Singh secured silver in the men’s 60kg category with a total lift of 264kg.

He equalled the Commonwealth Games record in the snatch with 121kg before adding 143kg in the clean and jerk.Raja Muthupandi also claimed silver in the men’s 65kg event after lifting a combined 286kg, including 126kg in the snatch and 160kg in the clean and jerk.
Malaysia’s Muhamad Aznil Bin Bidin won the gold with a Games record total of 299kg.In boxing, Jadumani Singh advanced to the men’s 55kg quarter-finals after defeating Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman, while Preeti Pawar entered the women’s 54kg quarter-finals with a win over Malawi’s Deborah Mtenje.
India’s medal tally at the Games has now reached four, comprising one gold, two silver and one bronze. Para-powerlifter Jhandu Kumar had opened India’s account with a bronze medal in the men’s heavyweight event on the opening day.
