Patna, July 27: Bihar took a major step towards strengthening its dairy sector on Monday with the foundation stone laying of a 20 metric tonne per day (MTPD) curd and lassi processing plant at the Biharsharif Dairy Project in Nalanda, a move aimed at boosting farmers’ incomes, generating employment and expanding the production capacity of COMFED’s flagship dairy brand, Sudha.
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary inaugurated the project, which is expected to cater to the rising demand for value-added dairy products while enhancing Sudha’s competitiveness in domestic and international markets. The expansion is also expected to attract further investments in dairy processing and reinforce Bihar’s dairy value chain.
The initiative is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Sahkar Se Samriddhi’ (Prosperity through Cooperation) and the objectives of White Revolution 2.0, launched by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, to strengthen India’s dairy cooperative movement and expand the global footprint of Indian dairy products.
Addressing the gathering, Choudhary said Sudha has emerged as a symbol of rural prosperity and self-reliance in Bihar.
“Sudha represents much more than a dairy brand. It is the backbone of the livelihoods, self-reliance and aspirations of millions of dairy farmers across Bihar,” the Chief Minister said.

He also expressed confidence that Sudha would evolve into a globally competitive dairy brand through sustained investments and expansion of the cooperative network.
COMFED Managing Director Shirsat Kapil Ashok highlighted the federation’s achievements during the first 100 days of the present government, stating that more than 2,500 new dairy cooperative societies had been established across Bihar, resulting in an increase of over 300,000 litres in daily milk procurement compared to the previous year.
Ashok also outlined COMFED’s roadmap for the next 100 days, which includes expansion of the Sudha Sakhi initiative and Prime Minister’s Veterinary Medicine Centres, besides livestock breed improvement projects such as a proposed Semen Station in Lakhisarai and an AITI Centre in Munger to improve cattle genetics and productivity.
As part of the programme, the Chief Minister distributed deep freezers to 300 retailers to strengthen Sudha’s frozen products distribution network and flagged off a specially designed vehicle for the transportation of sick and infirm livestock.
Officials said the new processing facility is expected to play a key role in enhancing value-added dairy production, creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for farmers and further positioning Bihar as an emerging hub in India’s rapidly growing dairy industry.
