Glasgow, July 23: India opened its medal account at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain secured a place in the women’s 75kg boxing semifinals, guaranteeing herself at least a bronze medal.
The 28-year-old boxer from Assam advanced directly to the last four following the tournament draw, eliminating the need to compete in the quarterfinals.
Under Commonwealth Games boxing rules, all semifinalists are assured of a bronze medal.
Lovlina is scheduled to face Tuvalu’s TKBP Taafaki in the semifinal on July 31. A victory in that contest will earn her a place in the gold medal bout and an opportunity to claim the top podium finish.
The assured medal marks a significant milestone in Lovlina’s career, as it is her first medal at the Commonwealth Games.
She has previously earned honours at the Olympic Games, World Championships, Asian Games and Asian Championships, making the Commonwealth Games the last major multi-sport event to be added to her list of achievements.
India will now look to Lovlina to convert her guaranteed podium finish into a gold medal as the boxing competition progresses. Her early success has also provided a positive start to India’s medal campaign at the Games.
