New Delhi, July 23: Delhi Police deployed additional security personnel across central Delhi after clashes broke out near Sansad Marg during protests by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), leaving five police personnel injured and prompting authorities to temporarily suspend mobile internet services around Jantar Mantar, as reported by ANI.
The violence erupted near Park Hotel on Sansad Marg after a section of protesters allegedly clashed with police. Officers fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd after demonstrators allegedly became unruly, while some protesters allegedly pelted stones and bottles at security personnel and chased police officers in parts of Connaught Place, police said.
Police said five personnel were injured in the clashes, including two assistant commissioners of police (ACPs), an inspector, a head constable and a constable.
One of the injured officers, ACP Jai Prakash of Punjabi Bagh, sustained a forehead injury after being struck by a stone while on duty at Jantar Mantar at about 4:30 p.m., police said.
“At about 4:30 PM, ACP Jai Prakash, ACP/Punjabi Bagh, sustained an injury to his forehead at Jantar Mantar while performing lawful duty, when the protesters resorted to stone-pelting. One of the stones hit the ACP on his forehead. He has been shifted to the hospital for medical treatment. Further updates will be conveyed as and when received,” Delhi Police said in a statement.
Later in the evening, ACP Vivek Bhagat of Connaught Place was injured after miscreants allegedly attacked police with stones and bottles near Tolstoy Marg at about 8:30 p.m., officials said. He was taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for treatment. Police said the situation remained tense for a few minutes before stabilising.

Authorities reinforced security across central Delhi, deploying additional police and paramilitary personnel around Parliament, Sansad Marg, Connaught Place and Parliament Street Police Station. Riot control vehicles and barricades were also positioned at key locations to prevent further escalation.
As a precautionary measure, authorities temporarily suspended mobile internet services within a 1.5-km radius of Jantar Mantar.
Despite the clashes near Sansad Marg, the main protest site at Jantar Mantar remained largely peaceful, with CJP volunteers urging demonstrators to avoid violence.
Using loudspeakers, volunteers appealed to protesters to remain peaceful, stop stone-pelting and sit on the roads instead of confronting security personnel, warning that a single act of violence could undermine weeks of peaceful campaigning. Volunteers were also seen removing stones from roads, footpaths and traffic islands near Jantar Mantar to prevent them from being used during any confrontation.
