New Delhi, July 22: Climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk has said he is prepared to end his 25-day hunger strike if the Central Government provides a clear assurance that no legal or punitive action will be taken against young people who participated in the recent student-led protest movement.

In a message addressed to senior Union ministers, Wangchuk said he appreciated the government’s willingness to engage in dialogue and urged authorities to protect peaceful protesters from legal consequences.

He maintained that the students had raised their concerns through democratic means and should not face retaliation.

According to Wangchuk, government representatives assured him that several demands would receive positive consideration.

These include financial assistance for families affected by the examination controversy, a parliamentary discussion on accountability, and other issues related to the education system.

Wangchuk stated that a formal commitment safeguarding the students would be the deciding factor in ending his indefinite fast.

He added that, without such an assurance, he would continue the protest.

He also appealed to students participating in the movement to temporarily suspend their demonstrations and engage in dialogue with the government if meaningful assurances are provided.

In a video message shared on social media, Wangchuk reiterated that his primary concern is the welfare of the young protesters.

He said he hopes the issue can be resolved through discussion rather than confrontation.Meanwhile, Delhi Police have registered multiple FIRs in connection with incidents linked to the protests.

The cases reportedly involve allegations of rioting, damage to public property, assault on public servants, and violations related to flying drones in a restricted area.

Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage and other electronic evidence to identify those allegedly involved.

The developments come as efforts continue to find a resolution to the protest, with both dialogue and legal proceedings moving forward simultaneously.

Wangchuk has emphasized that protecting students from punitive action remains essential for building trust and reaching a peaceful settlement.
